About

ABOUT THE PRACTICE

Emile ("Milo") Primeaux, Esq. (he/they) offers legal representation to historically marginalized people in New York State, with a particular focus on and commitment to issues impacting LGBTQ+ people and communities outside of NYC.

Accessible

Milo operates a virtual law practice and handles most client work remotely, utilizing:
 

  • A secure online client portal that allows you to safely and confidently share documents and information about your case remotely from wherever you are

  • Video conferencing, like Google Hangouts, Skype, etc., as well as email, phone, fax, and/or regular old snail mail

  • Limited in-person meetings or court appearances, only as needed

Affordable

​

Milo works hard to make the cost of legal help affordable for all clients by:
 

  • Working virtually out of a home office, which drastically reduces overhead expenses (e.g., office rental, travel, etc.)

  • Favoring effective, inexpensive strategies like administrative proceedings and other out-of-court negotiation options to reach your unique goals

  • Disfavoring costly and time-consuming litigation

  • Offering reduced sliding-scale fees to clients who demonstrate a need

This practice operates on the principle that every person deserves to live, work, and play with dignity and respect, not despite who they are, but because of it.

Milo acknowledges and condemns the existence and impact of intersecting systems of oppression on people of color, sexual and gender minorities, people with disabilities, non-citizens and non-native English speakers, people who are incarcerated and who have criminal records, poor people, and people living with HIV or AIDS. Milo is deeply committed to using personal and professional power and privilege to dismantle these violent systems, so we can all get free.

Community-Centered

​

Milo practices holistic legal advocacy, valuing each client as a whole person with unique needs and goals. To that end, he also offers community enrichment and leadership development programs to tackle some of life's issues that the law cannot.

Milo Primeaux, Esq.

Emile ("Milo") Primeaux, Esq. (he/they) is a queer transgender person and long-time LGBTQ+ rights advocate. In addition to running this solo civil rights practice, Milo founded Just Roots Consulting, which works to raise the bar of equity and inclusion excellence for organizations, institutions, and individuals nationwide.

Previously, Milo led the LGBT Rights Project at Empire Justice Center in Rochester, NY, and served as an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Legal Fellow at Whitman-Walker Health in Washington, DC. He has provided direct legal services to hundreds of low-income LGBTQ+ people, focusing especially on transgender name changes and LGBTQ-based discrimination in employment, education, healthcare, and places of public accommodation. He's trained over 1,000 attorneys and judges to respectfully and competently serve LGBTQ+ people, and has equipped LGBTQ+ communities nationwide to exercise their legal rights under state and federal law. He works closely with state administrative agencies, legislators, and policymakers to ensure that the law works for all LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.

Milo currently serves on the Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Judicial Commission of the New York State Courts. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association's LGBTQ Section, Monroe County Bar Association's Committee on LGBTQ People & the Law, as well as the National Lawyers Guild, National Employment Lawyers Association, and the National Transgender Bar Association. He earned a Bachelors in Philosophy from the Ohio State University, and his Juris Doctor from the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law.

Milo lives with his partner Beau on a 22-acre farm in Livingston County, NY. Together they raise Icelandic sheep and chickens. Together they strive to live sustainably, reduce their carbon footprint, and promote local farming and commerce within their broader communities.
