Spring 2021 Paid Legal Internship

Milo Primeaux, Esq. (he/they) is a queer transgender civil rights attorney with a virtual solo practice in Upstate New York. He is currently seeking a 3L law student or recent law school graduate with strong legal research and writing skills for a part-time 10-week internship for Spring 2021. All work will be done remotely, so no need to travel, but you must have a reliable internet connection, cell service, computer with video capabilities, and access to Westlaw, Lexis, or a similar legal research platform.

Deadline for Application: Rolling until filled (pref. Jan. 1, 2021)

Dates: 10-14 weeks total

Primary Tasks:

  • Conduct significant legal research and writing for plaintiff-side discrimination claims in employment, healthcare access, education, housing, and/or public accommodations

  • Assist in preparation of complaints and rebuttals to file with state and/or federal administrative agencies (e.g., NYS Division of Human Rights, EEOC, HHS, HUD, etc.)

  • Remotely attend investigative conferences, settlement negotiations, and public hearings

  • Prepare and file transgender name change petitions

  • Conduct client and witness interviews

 

Professional Skills / Core Competency Requirements:

  • Strong legal research and writing skills

  • Highly organized and manage time well

  • Communicate clearly and unafraid to ask questions

  • Exhibit honesty and integrity while working remotely

  • Utilize intersectional and anti-oppression frameworks (systems thinking) in legal research, writing, and problem-solving

  • Center anti-racism principles in all work and interactions with clients

  • LGBTQ+ competent and respectful

  • Comfortably and confidently interact with people of all races, disabilities, gender identities, gender expressions, and sexual orientations

  • Creative and resourceful, both in legal arguments and life generally

 

Compensation / Experience for You:

  • $4,000 stipend (no benefits)

  • Mentored by experienced civil rights attorney

  • Experience working in a solo / small practice

  • 2+ significant legal writing samples

  • Practice client interactions and engagement, as well as preparing and filing administrative complaints and name change petitions for NYS residents
